Two
noted German heavyweights Mercedes-Benz E Class and BMW 5 Series will
take on each other in the mid-luxury sedan segment in the coming weeks. The
E Class, which goes on sale today, has a trick up its sleeve to counter
its arch rival. Mercedes is launching the extended wheelbase version of
the E Class which means it is longer by 140 mm than its standard
version.The
added length had provided the saloon with more interior space
reinforcing the belief that the E Class largely is a chauffer-driven
car. At least a third of Mercedes-Benz’s India sales comes from this
model alone thus making it the highest selling car for the luxury car market leader.
Interestingly, this version of the E Class was
tailor-made for the Chinese market where extended wheel base versions
are the preferred lot. India being a developing automotive market, may
be following the buying pattern of its neighbour, thus putting a sharper
focus on luxury for the rear seats. The flagship Mercedes car
gets all the bells and whistles for its price. These range from
electrically adjustable rear seats to button operated window shades for
rear passenger windows and rear windshield. The car also gets two
massive sunroofs for front and rear passengers.Rear passengers
also get illuminated vanity mirrors integrated into the roof and a
three-zone climate control system with four vents at the rear and six on
the dashboard. The car comes with two drive options – Comfort and
Sports – allowing the driver to choose on the basis of the driving environment.
Meanwhile, BMW which has been battling the heat from
Mercedes and Audi, will take the covers off the 5 Series after a few
weeks. The 5 Series is a direct rival of the E Class but sells in
smaller numbers compared to the Mercedes best-seller The new 5
Series also gets a more focused passenger comfort area with a slightly
larger rear seating space and a slightly extended boot space. The
E Class is the third launch by Mercedes in 2017 preceded by refreshed A
and B Class few weeks ago. The 5 Series and E Class will face
competition from the Audi A6 and the Jaguar XF.
